Chess Opening Traps & Gambits: The Data-Driven Playbook

TL;DR

  • This branch covers four real gambits and sharp openings on this site, each backed by millions of Lichess games at the rating range the opening suits.
  • Every trap, refutation, or "common mistake" claim here is checked directly against this site's own move-frequency and results data, not assumed from an opening's reputation.
  • King's Gambit (about 78 million games at 900 to 2200): Fischer's engine-approved "bust" move is real, but only 16% of opponents play it after 3.Nf3, and White wins 53% of games after 2.f4.
  • Danish Gambit (about 17 million games at 900 to 2000): 73% of players grab the second pawn, and White wins 56% of those games. Black's cleanest answer, 3...d5, is played in only 4.5%.
  • Budapest Gambit (about 8.1 million games at 900 to 2100): a real 1918 upset over a world-class player, and 42% of White players still fall for its most famous trap.
  • Ponziani Opening (about 12 million games at 600 to 1500): a genuine, documented trap that wins material outright, and 70% of players who reach it fall for it.

What Makes a "Trap" Real

Chess content is full of claims like "this move loses" or "nobody knows how to meet this", most of them unverifiable, some of them simply wrong. Every piece in this branch is built from a different standard: does this site's own real game data actually show what's being claimed, a specific move that's genuinely common, a specific refutation that genuinely wins material, a specific historical result that's genuinely checkable.

Where our data covers a trap, we quote how often players fall for it and how those games end, always labelled with the rating band. The Stafford Gambit, the Two Knights and the Englund Gambit are all in our trainers now. Where our data doesn't cover a trap, like Scholar's Mate or the Fried Liver Attack itself, we say so and stick to lines we've checked move by move with a chess program.
